The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Lantern Parade lights up Alii Drive with a glowing procession of light, music and color, culminating with a traditional Bon Dance. This year, teh Lantern Parade honors Ganemono,  celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of the first group of Japanies immigrants to Hawaii.

A unique recipe contest spotlighting the use of Kona coffee. This competition is open to Professionals, Culinary Students, Amateurs and Keiki, who aspire to compete with their prized original Kona Coffee recipes for the coveted top prizes in two categories, sweet and savory.

As a must-see event of the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, this year’s theme, “Tales of Kona,” highlights the heritage of the Kona community. Come hear unique Kona stories and experience diverse forms of storytelling in Hawaii. The event will feature local music and entertainment, celebrity chef Sam Choy, kupuna talk story, specialty food vendors, community artists and cultural practitioners, hands-on family activities, pop-up exhibit, historic farmhouse and coffee mill interpretive programs, and more.

  • Admission is free. Food and merchandise available for purchase. Event parking is at the Kealakekua Ranch Center in Captain Cook. A free shuttle will provide transportation to and from the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.

What’s a cupping you ask? Cupping is a formal judging where the taste and aroma of brewed coffee are evaluated by industry professionals. An international panel of professional cupping judges usestrict standards and coffee preparations to conduct side-by-side blind tastings. For two days, fudges sniff, slurp and taste their way through 75+ entries looking for the top 10 coffees that will move to the exciting Thursday’s finals at Makaeo County Pavilion .
